ROCHESTER, NY - Het was vrijdag tegen het middaguur toen Val Block, die tijdens de tweede ronde van het PGA Championship 2023 over de achtste fairway bij Oak Hill Country Club liep, naar haar man wees en iets probeerde uit te leggen.

Golf is, zoals u weet, een wreed spel, en het is in geen enkel opzicht meedogenlozer dan in het harde feit dat soms de kloof tussen degenen die geweldig zijn, zoals Scheffler, en degenen die gewoon heel, heel, heel goed zijn, kan net als Block zowel onmogelijk smal als onmogelijk breed lijken.
Had Block een van deze tourprofessionals kunnen zijn als hij er als jongere man all-in op was gegaan?
Daar is geen antwoord op. Er is alleen wat hier is. Voor Block begon deze hele week als een kans om een spelerscarrière af te sluiten waar hij beide handen aan vasthield en die vaak naar beneden duwde. Na het spelen van Divisie II golf aan de Universiteit van Missouri-St. Louis schreef hij zich in aan de San Diego Golf Academy en kort daarna nam hij een baan als assistent-prof aan bij de Lakes Country Club in Palm Desert, Californië. Hij was een geweldige speler en de clubleden begrepen niet waarom hij daar was. Nadat Block de California State Open in 2001 had gewonnen, hielden die leden een barbecue-inzamelingsactie om genoeg geld in te zamelen om hem naar PGA Tour Q-School te sturen. Hij vond het plan absurd en ging met tegenzin.

Die vrees weerhield Block er niet van om door te gaan naar de tweede fase op TPC Craig Ranch. Daar kwam echter de bevestiging die hij al die tijd had verwacht. Niet alleen waren de andere jongens beter dan hij, maar ze zagen er ook ellendig uit. De stress. De last van een leven dat afhankelijk is van de wispelturigheid van een spel dat met een kromme stok wordt gespeeld. Block wilde het tourleven niet nastreven, een beslissing die hij nog steeds 'een goed idee' noemt.
"Het kostte me geen 10 jaar om dat uit te zoeken", zei Block vrijdag. "Het kostte me een jaar en ik was er blij mee."
Maar hij stopte niet met spelen. Tegenwoordig is Block 10 keer PGA-speler van het jaar in Zuid-Californië en 2022 PGA Professional Player of the Year. Dit is zijn vijfde PGA Championship en hij heeft ook in twee US Opens gespeeld.
Block komt ook op 50. Aan de ene kant, wanneer hij thuis in Orange County speelt met lokale tourprofs zoals Patrick Cantlay en Beau Hossler, ziet hij dat hij met hen kan omgaan. Aan de andere kant speelt hij ook ongeveer 40 meter achter hen na elke rit. Block kwam naar Oak Hill met een nu-of-nooit-gevoel en stelde twee hoge doelen: het weekend spelen en eindigen als lage clubprof.
In het begin verliep alles volgens plan. Block schoot donderdag een even-par 70. Hij beantwoordde bogeys met birdies en bleef constant. De ronde eindigde in bijna duisternis en Block belandde tot ongeveer 20.30 uur op Oak Hill. Toen vertrokken hij en Val, stopten voor het avondeten en stapten tussen 23.00 en 23.30 uur in bed. Het alarm sloeg hard om 04.30 uur lokale tijd - 01.30 uur PT - en de twee zaten 30 minuten later weer in de auto.
In sommige opzichten gebeurde alles zo snel dat Block nooit stopte om te beseffen wat er gebeurde.
"Ik merkte vanmorgen dat we van de auto naar het clubhuis liepen in exact hetzelfde tempo als gisteren", zei John Jackson, een fulltime caddie op Pebble Beach die deze week met Block reisde om zijn loops af te handelen. “We gingen naar de driving range, hij sloeg vijf ballen en toen begonnen we verhalen uit te wisselen. Hij was helemaal op zijn gemak.”
Toen begon Block aan zijn ronde, speelde zijn spel en maakte een birdie op drie van zijn eerste vijf holes. Hij zat zo bovenaan het klassement toen degenen in het Media Center begonnen te Googelen: "Michael Block."
"Er waren plotseling veel mensen in de buurt, eigenlijk precies op het moment dat we de bocht maakten", zei Taylor Pendrith, een lid van Block's groep. “Toen zag ik het leaderboard op nummer 2 en besefte ik dat hij 3-under en één back was. Ik had zoiets van, oh, wauw. Maar het was niet verrassend. De man was het helemaal aan het strippen. Hij had de volledige controle.”
Ondertussen gluurde Block de hele dag nooit naar het leaderboard.
Een bogey op nr. 4 voelde niet als een groot probleem.
Toen kwam er een wending in het verhalenboek. Jimmy Chitwood dichtte een vrije worp dicht. Op een van Oak Hill's meest beheersbare holes, de par-3 vijfde, koos Block voor een ijzer 8 vanaf 165 meter afstand en sloeg een van de slechtste slagen ooit gezien in alle 105 jaar van dit mooie evenement. Een koude, dode, 20-handicapper's shank. Geen tijd om zelfs maar te schreeuwen: "Fore right!" Het schot van Block zou over een erfafscheiding zijn gegaan als er geen vriendelijke boom was geweest die hem omver had geworpen. De daaropvolgende dubbele bogey creëerde een gevoel van totale ondergang. Het voelde alsof er een zeer reële kans was dat Block zou imploderen, op de een of andere manier van een van de leiders naar een totale ineenstorting zou gaan en misschien zelfs de slag zou missen.
Arme Val. "Ik wil gewoon simpele pars", smeekte ze kort na het wrak. “Geef niet eens om birdies. Maak dit gewoon af.
De enige die zich geen zorgen maakt? Haar man. Na de schenkel liep Block langs Pendrith, maakte oogcontact en grinnikte. Pendrith was verbijsterd. "Zoals, hey, als je daar om kunt lachen, goed voor je, man," zei hij na afloop met opgetrokken wenkbrauwen.
Na een par op nr. 6 keek Michael naar Val aan de kant van de green en knikte geruststellend, met de mond: "We zijn in orde." Val, een bundel zenuwen, knikte terug.

Live op ESPN werd Block geïntroduceerd als de enige clubprof in de afgelopen 20 jaar die na 36 holes in de top 20 van het PGA Championship zat. ‘Laat me niet huilen,’ zei hij. "Dit is het laatste kleine doel dat ik heb voor mijn carrière."
Wat onduidelijk is, is de ontstaansgeschiedenis van dat doel. Is het om te bewijzen dat hij altijd goed genoeg was om met de echte profs te spelen? Of misschien is het om te bewijzen dat hij de beste clubprof is die er is. Of misschien is het om al zijn collega-clubprofs te vertegenwoordigen.
Want ja, vergeet niet, als deze week voorbij is, gaat Block weer aan het werk. Hij klokt rond 8 uur in bij Arroyo Trabuco, haalt de salarisadministratie of welke stapel papieren dan ook op zijn bureau uit en geeft dan een paar lessen. Het gangbare tarief - $ 125 voor 45 minuten op het bereik of een speelles met negen holes voor $ 500. Dan komt Block lunchen voordat hij weer naar buiten gaat voor een middagles.
Maar dan, rond 17.00 uur, arriveren de twee zonen van Michael en Val, Dylan en Ethan, op de baan. Block werkt dagelijks met zijn beide jongens. "En het is het beste van de wereld", zei hij. En iets wat hij niet zou kunnen als hij een tourprof was.
Dylan, 18, en Ethan, 16, zijn beide elite junioren. Dylan speelt op 5 juni samen met zijn vader in de US Open-secties in de Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles. Beiden zouden zich kunnen kwalificeren voor de US Open.
